We can perform a vasectomy, or ‘teaser’ operation, on intact males, either on farm or at the practice.
Why use teaser rams?
- Quick and simple procedure.
- Tighten your lambing block.
- Encourage ewes to come into season a week or two earlier than normal.
- Stimulate maiden ewes to cycle naturally prior to tupping.
How to use teasers:
- Teasers are introduced at a ratio of 1 per 100 ewes for 14 days and then replaced with fertile rams.
- Most ewes will be served at either 18 or 25 days after the teaser is first introduced.
Which ram to select?
- A teaser needs to be prepared at least six weeks in advance (to make sure he is not fertile).
- A shearling – will last for several seasons.
- Fit and healthy – no lameness, good body condition and good teeth.
- Health status to match your flock e.g. MV tested.
